It Begins,...

His eyes fell lazily on the view panel, his view partially obstructed by the thick haze of cigar smoke lingering in the air.
"Tinker!" He shouted through clenched teeth, "Get your ass over here, looks like we got another one!"

His hands slid over the panel controls and he enlarged the sceen in front of him. The view panel expanded to 3x its size filling the cluttered underground warehouse with a faint blue glow.

"Shes a big bitch too!" he muttered over the sound of Tink stumbling over some debris and cursing the faint light.
"Were gonna a make a killin on this one if we can get to it before the other scrappers."

"Its on the fringes Boss, way out there" Tink said barely audible through his strange foriegn accent.
"We are going to have to call in Wyatt for this."

"Lovely" the Boss hissed over his cigar, the smoke rolling out with the sound.
"What about Mason,.. he could pull'er apart and get the valuable materials pretty quick?!" the Boss asked as his eyes met Tink's.

Tink rubbed the scruff on his chin and looked at the screen again.
"Hes good Boss, But Wyatts better at the dash then anyone we know..."
He said as he looked over the crumpled Mech on the view panel
"You really wanna risk losing the salvage on this one to a competitor?"
Tinks face seemed stretched as he continued to rub the scruff on his chin...
"Masons good,....but..."
He eyed the metal hulk lying in its own debris, his thoughts lost in the view panel

The Boss drew on his cigar, and held the smoke.
They both eyed the view panel in silence for a few moments.

"Call Wyatt..." he muttered as he accessed another view panel and began pricing components
"Maybe we'll get lucky and someone will shoot him this time."

Tink smiled as he turned away
"Yeah,.. RIGHT!"
his accent thick as he stumbled off for the comm panel
"I got 50 credits on Wyatt"

The haze of sleep vanished quickly as "Bertha's" comm panel blinked to life, the flashing lights cutting through his dream like a knive.
"Jesus Christ" Wyatt moaned as he shifted forward in his chair, bringing it full upright at its console. "I'm coming I'm coming" he said to no one in particular as he ran his hand through his hair and activated the comm.

The Screen materialized and flickered a bit, and began fading slowly.
Wyatt slammed his palm down on the top of the panel, and the screen snapped to full view.
"Oh Hell" he said "What do you want Tink?"
on the view screen Tink forced a half grin, and rubbed the scruff on his chin.
"Boss's got a real beauty for ya.." he said matter of factly "An Atlas is down near the fringes of Tobor and he wants the salvage."
"That so?" Wyatt said as he stretched his large frame..."At the usual rate I suspect eh?"
Tinks face went stoic, as he shot a glance over his shoulder toward the Boss
"Well 10% is the going rate for a salavage dash, if you..."
"Well tell Da Boss.." Wyatt interupted loudly a deep tone of sarcasm in his voice "if he wants it for 10% he can drag his big ass out there and get the fuckin thing himself!"
Wyatt smiled at the view panel and craned his neck as if trying to look over Tink' shoulder toward the unseen Boss.
"Didya get that?" Wyatt said grinning

Tink's face filled with the look of a doomed man, who was about to deliver some real shitty news
there was a long silence, and then Tink turned away flipping the sound to mute.

Wyatt watched amused as Tink spoke and then flinched, cringed even,
as the barrage of profanity slammed into him.
No doubt the subject of Wyatt's mother and her relationship to some strange unwholesome animal was now being declared in livid colorful detail.

A stray piece of scrap flew by Tink's head, he barely ducked in time

"His reflexes are slowing down in his old age" Wyatt muttered out loud as he watched the silent sceen played out on the view screen in front of him.
"or the Boss's aim is off."
Wyatt smiled and settled back into his seat, looking into the view sceen with a smug look of humor over his face.

After several silent exchanges, Tink finally turned to the screen and activated the sound. His face pale and twitching a bit as he began to speak.
"The Boss has agreed to pay you 20%" Tink said with a look of hopeful anticipation "but he wants all salvage-ables delivered within 12 hours..."
Tinks hand found the scruff on his face again, his thick accent faded slightly
"Sounds like a good deal to me" He said as if trying to convince himself of the fact.

Wyatt stared silently at the view screen for what must have seemed like an eternity for Tink.
Tinks face began to change, the look of doom filling it once again, he spoke quietly this time
"Wha...What do you say Wyatt?" he asked shooting a lightning quick glance over his shoulder.

"20% for 12 hours...." Wyatt said as he began to activate Bertha's massive power plants "I can live with that", he muttered without looking at Tink.

"Thats great!" Tink bellowed deliberately trying to let the Boss hear. "She's a big one, you should make a small fortu..."
The view panel snapped off as Wyatt ran his hands over the switches.
His face had changed, he took on a very serious demeanor.
Slowly he brought the massive recovery vehicle to life.

"ok baby" he said softly to the machine as the exterior lights poured forth into the dusty darkness. "Lets do it again."
His left hand slid the throttle bar forward like it had a thousand times, and the monsterous vehicle lurched gently forward, shaking off the debris all around as its powerful engines growled slightly.

with a snap his right hand spun his sidearm from its holster and back again.

"Oh I do hope we run into some competition..."

Bertha lumbered powerfully over the remains of felled buildings, a faded twisted sign came into view of the exterior lights.

Tobor 69km

"69 clicks eh..." Wyatt said smiling "Thats my lucky number!"

Bertha lumbered along at an incredible clip for such a large vehicle, traveling the rough remains of some untended expressway. Her exterior lights cutting deep through the darkness of ruined towns and factory parks, the rubble passing under her hulking mass kicking up massive dust wake as she growled over the terrain.
Inside Wyatt sat comfortably, his eyes fixed forward, his hands working the throttle and steering with a quiet familiararity.

Making the dash, racing for the fringes. Passing the stripped hulking wrecks of other Mechs occasionally, thier ghostly forms like strange giant skeletons half buried in the rubble, dust and debris of battles long since over.
Wyatt found a strange comfort here, in this mechanical wasteland. Here his mind would wander, thoughts of the past would fill him and he could find reason to smile. The terrain became more and more sparse, Wyatt barely noticed, a small smile on his face.

A tiny beeping annoyingly broke into his daydream, and his face went stoic. The locator frequency Tink had supplied was actually a good one, and he was almost on top of the salvage now.
He flashed a glance at the view panel, adjusted course and throttled back a bit.
"Should be able to see her any second now", he muttered to himself glancing at the view panel again and continuing to throttle back.

Bertha lumbered over a blast crater, and there it was, lying flat on its back, the monsterous Atlas Mech. It showed many visable signs of battle, but the killer was obviously the destroyed right leg. The entire leg was missing from the upper actuators on down, moyomers lay tangled and hanging from the blast area. The upper body of the mech showed some damage, but looked like the gyros would probably still be in tact.
Wyatt grinned as he eyed the hulk, this was gonna be a big payoff.

"Time to do a little surgery" he said out loud as he activated Berthas massive manipulating arm, and cast a quick glance at his watch. "I got about 8 hours to get what I need and get the hell out of here".
Wyatt spun the pilot seat around and slid into the workstation, his hands grasping the joysticks that controlled the arm, his feet finding the many pedals.
He had barely extended the arm when the radar began to beep incesantly.
"Shit" he growled sliding out and craning his neck to see the radar.
A tiny red dot was approaching, the beep slowly becoming more rapid. "I knew this was going WAY to easy".

Wyatt snapped his sidearm from its holster and checked it for a moment, and then jammed it home.
Reaching up over his head without looking, his eyes still fixed on the approaching blip, he spun back the upper hatch and pushed it open.
Sliding the ladder down he climbed into the open turret and spun the large weapon towards the manacing looking cloud of dust approaching at high speed. He pressed his forehead into the sights and the screen activated, he zoomed in to maximum and sighed loudly as a large hover vehicle came into full view on the weapons screen.
"Its Club-Foot" he muttered with a great deal of distain "So much for Easy".

He activated the weapons powercore and sharpened the image, watching the range decrease as the Hover Vehicle closed distance.
"Just a bit closer" Wyatt said quietly to himself as he tensed over the trigger "That should just about do it..."

There was a bright white flash in Wyatts head, a huge pain ripped through him and then everything went black.
