Charter

A tale of the 9th Legion Bridgeburners.

“When the winds of war blow, whole nations are swept up in the vortex only to settle back to earth in vast fields of blood and ashes.

When the passions of Faith have done burning fanatical souls, the seeds of Man return to till the earth and spawn a new generation of Holy fighters and clerics.

And the cycle starts anew.”
-The Apostate.

In Nomen: Or how the Bridgeburners got their name.

Some things come to pass by design. Some things come to pass because they must. Yet sometimes, things come to pass by the quirks of personalities of the actors involved and the movements of time.

So it was with the 9th Legion, once sworn to fight alongside the faithful of the Natural Evolution.

The leaders of the armies were not generals, they did not possess to back their claims great names or greater histories. At best, they would have been perceived as mercenary riff raff, ragtag survivors of past conflicts the heroes of which would never have acknowledged their presence.

It was under this inauspicious cloud that the leaders of these mercenaries found themselves before the gates of the ruler of the Natural Evolution. They did not beg for entry and protection, they did not bow. They simply offered their services and waited for a reply.

Was it wisdom and foresight that made it so their offer of alliance was accepted? It will never be known and the annals of history would not record such minutiae. What can be shown is that the mercenaries, thankful to have found providence, wished to return faith with loyalty and service. They looked amongst their new brothers and arms and said:

“We cannot be counted amongst the first because doing so would besmirch the memory and honour of those that have fought so long under this banner and their founders.”

“We cannot be counted the seconds for when the summons first came to us, we did not heed it and searched for our fortunes elsewhere.”

“We cannot be counted the thirds either for that privilege comes with services and deeds.”

And so it went, back and forth amongst the leaders.

Finally one amongst them remarked that many armies fought as groups. That these groups or legions were made up of one to four different forces working together. That at the time of them joining the alliance, the forces presently being arrayed the way they were, they would constitute in fact the newest and ninth fighting group. The 9th Legion.

And so it was.

But the search for identity and the quest for usefulness did not end there. Before ennobling themselves and be accepted, they must first prove themselves. This would not be easy for the 9th Legion was an isolated force far from the centers of power and most times, far from the frontlines. What then could be their roles if they always came late to the fights?

So once more they cast about for inspiration and purpose. Soon, one amongst them broke forth. He ventured far and always went seeking for the enemy, identifying where they lay and how they were composed. When he had enough information, he would call back to his brothers in the legions and they would come in force. Treasuries, temples, lines of communications, all these soft targets were fair game. Fire became their calling card as more timber burned under their hands than many others. As they escaped pursuit, they would cut access, roads. When enemy armies threatened the borders, they would often send the stones that spanned the river ways to the turbulent waters below from right under the boots of the marching men.

They specialized in this mayhem, they had become the Bridgeburners. First in, last out.

In Morituri: Or the end of the Natural Evolution and the beginning of the long march.

In times of peace, the legion manned the further outposts or sent men out to the hovels and dives of enemy nations to learn what they might and see what was hidden. In times of war, like these, they were sent out to do what they did best.

This war was still new, the forces at play numerous and so the outcome of the conflict uncertain. For days now the legion scoured the forces arrayed against them, prying for weaknesses or creating breaches where they could. Their daggers and torches had been doing their work relentlessly and if the leaders allowed themselves a touch of pride, effectively.

But the tide would turn. The enemy had identified the agents of chaos that were plaguing them and were now marching to eradicate that threat. Although they were still winning, the Bridgeburners were hard pressed to hold their positions.

Then came the message… the Natural Evolution was no more. It was not capitulation, it was not defeat. In fact, this great alliance would bow out while on the verge of another triumph which many would later consider a fitting end.

Time had done what no other forces known to the mortals of Tonan could do, it had brought down the great alliance.

The 9th Legion Bridgeburners were once more without a patron, without an umbrella under which to ply their trade.

The leaders of the now once more mercenary army conferred and evaluated their position. They would fight on with the skills acquired and honed under the banner of the Natural Evolution and would… naturally evolve, under their own banners.

The sorcerer-priests gathered and created the greatest fog they had yet produced. Under it they had shrouded many of their old allies to allow them a proper retreat and to themselves an opaque cloak under which to reform.

Once they were ready, they would march forth once more. They were still the 9th Legion Bridgeburners. First in, last out.

Have fun, don’t take the game too seriously.
