Faith: Barnabas

Written during the Age of Devan, transcribed by the Founder, Reylan Talonspyre,
The time of the Gods hangs heavy around the hearts of a people wanting, needing, to believe in something. Sometimes the people turn back to the old faiths and the long dead prophets to seek comfort; while others stalk about the land looking for peace and serenity in the leaves and trees, but fail to grasp the truth that makes our world whole. Our liege, Barnabas was raised in one of the older houses within the old Empire. His closest friends and confidants remember him as a quiet boy with a dignity that hangs from his very shoulders. As he grew, so did his prowess in battle and politics, the currency of our time. As the blood of the new age became a torrent destined to wash all manner of being from this earth, the quiet Barnabas secretly gathered his advisors and plotted the destruction of the other two splinter states of the once glorious Empire.
It was said, at the beginning of this war, that each action that Barnabas took was calculated and pondered upon by the good demagogue before he subjected his peasantry to the labors that would come from royal decree. Even though there were those who saw Barnabas as a foolish idealist, with a thirst for honorable conflict, there were some, a select few, who saw him as more than that. These few men came together and plotted and schemed, toiled endlessly upon the very doctrine of war, and in the end, brought with them the armies of many kingdoms to support their anointed leader, Barnabas. These chosen few became close advisors and the bearers of Barnabas’ trust. With this new found grace came opinions of arrogance and untested wisdom.
On the battlefield, as the war for the inheritance of the Old Empire raged on, Barnabas led with calculating wisdom and ferocious spirit. The races that followed his banner chanted his name in engagement after engagement, always pontificating about the necessity for chivalry, a general sense of honor, and brotherhood. It was here, as the newly conquered lands were divided amongst his field commanders, the first alliances were formed. The kingdoms forged from war would ally under a single banner, a banner that would represent the very nature of Barnabas’ message to the people of the Old Empire: honor and victory.
At this time our heroes, those men and women who served the clandestine group called the Lex Militis or "the law of all soldiers", were unknowns. They were hidden in obscurity with the other countless faces that served under our liege, Barnabas, during the first bouts of violence with the simpering Letonian armies and the witch-queen Angelique’s malignant forces of oppression on Islan. But as time progressed and each of the Lex Militis were granted land rights through their continued service to Barnabas and their acquisition of the spoils the civil war brought them; the prestige of each warrior, diplomat, sorcerer or assassin became widely known throughout the lands.
In time, the Lex Militis gathered its loyal devotees and forged a new bond, one of statehood and kinship, always holding to the ideals of the prophet and general who had shown them a way of living far beyond that of mere survival, Barnabas.
Written during the Winter Solstice of Devan, transcribed by the Founder, Reylan Talonspyre,
As I try to keep myself warm with mead and sheep skins, contemplating how these first months of our campaign against the Letonians have progressed, I am saddened by the recent news of desertions, slovenliness, and all other things that plague a winter campaign. We Founders meet in secret to discuss the state of our armies, but even now, things look bleak. We have dissolved decimated alliances and revived those that needed revivification. Founder Uno is very displeased with the Lex Militis’ performance as of late and has ordered those not able to motivate their troops to our cause stripped of rank and cast out from our host.It is shameful to see the despicable tactics of the Letonians at work; we only hope that the Angelicans are less unworthy of our liberation and beneficent administration of their lands. Even now, Founder Uno has rebuilt his general staff and restructured the way the Lex Militis operates on the battle field. We shall show the Angelicans and any surviving Letonians why we fight for Lord Barnabas.
As for those who have been left behind, we mourn the loss of our dead and pray to our Prophet for the continued strength of arms and the divine strategy he places within our minds. Though the winter months burn away at our souls, we dutifully continue to be an instrument of our lord and master, Barnabas’ will here on Islan.

The Ranking System
Lex Militis does not use complex ranking systems and foolish strategies for deployment of the most valuable assets, our soldiers. We therefore have kept it simple for the players who wish to join. Membership does not guarantee promotion, but rest assured that both Soldier and Law Giver are attainable by all those we trust within the guild.
Founder: These are the creators and supreme leaders of the Lex Militis. They are advised by the Law Givers, who act as assistants to the Founders.
Law Giver: These are the assistant leadership in Lex Militis. They are as powerful as the Founders without the ability to make crucial decisions dealing with guild policy. They must be obeyed as though they were Founders.
Soldier: The soldiers of Lex Militis are some of the brightest, skilled, and adaptable players in the game today. They serve at the pleasure of their Founders and work to create a better world through war, honor and balance.
Novice: These are the untested members of Lex Militis. Only after some time in this rank can an unknown become a hero and true soldier of Lex Militis.

Lex Militis Code of Conduct
We the soldiers, leaders, scouts, and sorcerers of the Lex Militis will allow our guild to act through this creed that, hopefully, will unify our faction and bring honor to many. Many ages we have fought against our enemies, using their despicable tricks and their lowborn values. Little did we see that in the reflection of our children’s eyes, they saw our enemies within us! This is a pact that we, Lex Militis, will adhere to. We know that there are many guilds within our own faction, as well as others, that will not follow this pact and for that we will not recognize them as allies and we will refuse to work with them. However, if this age does not bring prosperity or honor, then we will fight like the god-forsaken warmonger and use those lowborn values to our own advantage. For it is better to have children to love and a cause to fight for than to see the pathetic rats pillaging our children’s graves.
Principles
1. We agree that outside support from another guild during a time of war is unacceptable. The only acceptable method of outside support is scouting which has historically been considered an acceptable method of support from a guild’s particular faction. The scouting provided cannot be requested from Lex Militis; instead it must be a completely random act, usually associated with updating the faction database. When Lex Militis has information, beyond a reasonable doubt, that an opposing guild has received scum aid during a war, Lex Militis has the right to request similar aid from another guild in their faction.2. Sandbagging is defined as the purposeful reduction of average networth of a realm and/or guild to hide the actual military capability of said guild. This tactic is very hard to determine, but when found and proof given that a guild is doing just that, Lex Militis has the right to respond to those guilds found sandbagging as though they were fully built and ready for war. For example, if Lex Militis were to find an opposing faction’s guild that was suspected of sandbagging, Lex Militis will trade Total Land for Average Networth or Total Networth. The reasoning behind this move is that a guild with more land should technically have those two advantages unless they were using this tactic.
3. We will choose our wars in an officious and fair manner. Whomever we declare on will receive two out of three of the following advantages: Number of Members, Total Networth, and Average Networth. See Sandbagging for mitigating circumstances. First strike, though technically an advantage in war, does not count as an advantage that can be weighed in the same way as the above three listings, therefore Lex Militis will not be obliged to consider it unless we truly want to consider it in our favor.
4. Lex Militis will mention all of our enemy’s allies during a time of war if a scribe, ICQ, or AIM is sent to the us. However, the war thread will come up within twenty minutes of our war declaration. If you are denied information of which guilds will serve as your allies, within the hour, you may pick your own allies as you see fit.
5. Lex Militis will, in their charter, mention what types of communication (ICQ, AIM, etc.) they are reachable by beyond the standard in-game scribe. In this case we are reachable by the contact information listed in the guild contact information screen.
6. Upon intiating a war, Lex Militis will post the starting statistics of all guilds involved in the war and list the two to three advantages that they are providing the guild they are attacking. In addition, we will use an old technique of continual updates, provided through posts in the War Thread, to show the record of our heroic victory or crushing defeat.
7. Lex Militis will not hold a "silent peace", or a peace that is not spoken about on the boards or instant messages, with a guild we have just been engaged in hostilities with. All peace treaties and agreements will be made public upon their acceptance by the various officials involved. This will mean that our guild will not have the comfort of having undisturbed building time where they are generally immune from attacks. In addition, this will lessen any arguments that we were not truly at war. This way, if you wish to know when Lex Militis is no longer at war, just look to the war declaration page and the information will not only be correct but accurate (unless we had been declared upon).
8. During a war with multiple factions (Leto and Angelique), where Lex Militis finds itself on the side of an opposing faction fighting against a third, the Lex Militis will not turn on their allies at any point during the war until an official declaration of peace has been made. Even after this point, Lex Militis will consider the opposing guild to be fresh out of war and not a viable target. In other words, you won't have to watch your back with Lex Militis.
9. Lex Militis holds the right to stop fair-play practices and honorable means when it is deemed necessary for the self-preservation of the guild. Show us fairness and honor, you shall always receive it back in return.
10. Our duty is to the following, in order of importance: Game, Guild, Faction, and then Principles. For example, if following a certain principle espoused here would cause the disbandment of our guild, we would not take that course because it conflicts with our first duty, the guild.
11. Lex Militis reserves the right to call in assistance from another guild when it believes it is being wronged. Any strike that does not provide us the customary two out of three advantages will be responded to with assistance from other guilds.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What happens when one or both of the Founders disappear? If one of the Founders leaves or disappears, the other Founder will take the helm of the guild and make the necessary changes to the guild to see that it continues operation as normal. If both Founders are gone for longer than four days without notification as to their whereabouts, the Law Givers shall meet to decide who will take over the guild as a Regent. This is the only way this title can be given to a member of the Lex Militis. What does Lex Militis (LM) expect from it's members? We expect our players to treat others in the forums and via scribe with the respect that an opponent deserves. We are happy to engaged in warfare and will hold our lines against the toughest onslaught with both grace and honor. We do not cringe from a fight. In fact, we lust for the call of battle and the inevitable victory our forces will have over the weaker and more fragile armies of Angelique and Leto. When a council of war is called, every leader of every realm is required to take their orders from the Founders, and abide by those orders until they are completed or the Soldier, Law Giver, or Novice is dead. Strategy and proficiency at our trade is what makes us best at our chosen profession.
That profession is war.
How do I get accepted to Lex Militis (LM)? Everyone can get into LM, not everyone can stay. To be accepted into LM one must prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you can communicate with the rest of the guild. Upon being accepted you will be sent a scribe asking you to reply to it within 24 hours with the requested information.
The requested information: ICQ Universal Identification Number (UIN), AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) screen name, and Email.
Once you have provided us with at least some of that contact information and your available times for play, you can be promoted from the lower ranks into the rank of Soldier. From there, your advancement is completely dependent upon skill and activity.
How active should I be to join your guild? Activity means a few things for this guild. First, it means playing your turns for your various realms. Second, it means showing up for war chats and participating. Third, and finally, it means posting with our guild in Temper's Ball. Many guilds would not require their members to get involved in Temper's Ball, but this guild did have Reylan Talonspyre's hand in it, so here we are.
Why be active in Temper's Ball? Activity in Temper's Ball only generates more activity on the boards. Remember the good ages you have played with various other guilds. If you are new to the game, imagine a time when you had the most fun with your family. The reason for these good times are because you were communicating with others of similar interest and discussing various topics of interest. That is the purpose for this push within our membership to be active in the guild as well as in the general posting community. Temper's Ball is a part of Evernight and Canon, so Lex Militis will make it a priority to try and be a part of both.
How do you generally communicate in Lex Militis (LM)? We use email, ICQ, mIRC, and AIM to provide a quality of communication that will serve us in peace as well as war. Members should download ICQ or AIM and be familiar with mIRC and email use to be acceptable members of this guild. We recommend the use of Trillian as an easy way to have access to multiple types of Instant Messengers.
