This story is of how I, Ciroc, became the Girk of this clan. Now I bet you’re asking yourself, “What is The Girk?” Well, let me enlighten you. The Girk is basically the leader of a clan of Goblins. Since everyone knows that Goblins have little to no leadership skills, as you will find out more in my story, I bet you’re asking how I became their leader. Well since I actually lack all leadership skills I really have no idea, nor do I know how I got the Gnarls I got. Though with out them they I’d most likely have a harder time being the Girk.

Let me get to the story of how “The Clan of War-Challenged Goblins” came to be, so you have a better picture of whom and what we are.

I was born about 30 years ago, I was one of 13 baby Goblins my mother had that year. Since female goblins are few and far between, they were required to have as many children as they could before they died. I spent the better part of my first year in the cave I was born, learning things like how to walk, use a knife, and communicate. Then I was kicked out and told to fend for myself; later I found out this was very common, since goblins only reproduce once a year, and since they have large litters, they need to have their caves cleared out when the next group is born.

So at the age of one I left the cave in search of a new home and food. Quickly, I find that neither was as easily acquired as I had originally thought. I spent the better part of the next two years traveling the land of Tonan in search for food, killing both wild and not so wild life. Lucky for me, most humans and elves with their stupid superiority complexes couldn’t tell a goblin from another goblin, so I was able to get away with killing their live stock for food letting other goblins take the blame. After two years of doing this I started to understand that this is not the way a Goblin should live, and I knew I needed to find a home and some sort of actually job so I didn’t have to steal my food. So I went from town to town, looking for job openings, and someone to hire me. The first problem I found was that I didn’t understand enough human talk to actually figure out if there was job opening let alone get hired; luckily enough other goblins had the same idea I did and taught me the basics. The second problem I found was that no one wanted to hire a 3-4 year old untrained goblin. At this age we were still considered wild and untamed, who could blame them; after all, we were. The third and final problem I found was, other, younger, Goblins had recently visited the towns I had and had caused trouble and the humans were out for revenge. I was luckier then a lot of the other Goblins I traveled with.

Lucky for me I found an old sword smith who was going blind, and mistook me for an ugly uneducated human boy, and hired me to help him keep his business alive enough so he could drink merrily in his old age. At first he did most of the work and I would either copy him or watch him eagerly, but slowly over time he would do less and less of the work, and more and more over seeing making sure the weapon was properly made for the warriors and other men who came by this town.

I think I spent the better part of 10 years working for that old man, he taught me most of what I know about weapon making but I learned new tricks from mistakes that he never knew. I learned how to make the weapons faster and more reliable then he ever had, making his shop become well known with many customers, so many that even I had a hard time keeping up with the work load. So I had to convince him to allow me hire on extra staff members so I could train them and we could do more work. That is how I first met Bar’nok who you will find out later became one of my first Gnarls. Though our success didn’t last long, like I said I spent 10 years work for that old blacksmith but like all old men, he died, and with him so did his business, as no humans would come to a shop ran by Goblins. Luckily for me, the old man had left his building and business to me, so I had acquired my first home.

Once word had spread that I a goblin had was the owner of my own home the lord of the land, who was a greedy human, had decided he would have none of this and created an act that all goblins in his territory would have to spend a minimum of 5 years in the services of his army. Now as you would imagine all the goblins in the area were either rounded up by local police or were killed for attempting to escape the degree of the lord of this land. The ones who survived, were sent to training, at training we were often the first to be used as a demonstration, or the last to learn how to use a weapon. While the human soldiers learned things like self defense and horse riding, the goblins learn how to clean potatoes, cook meals and sharpen swords. It didn’t take long before the first war came for us. The humans who were much better trained road into battle and fought fearlessly, but many of them died. The goblin forces, on the other hand, which were well trained in meal making rode into the battle blood thirsty, and destroyed the enemy forces. Naturally the humans took all the credit for their victory and defeat of the enemy nation, while we Goblins got to enjoy an extra meal in our separate section of the camp.

That I think is when I first started to become the Girk I am today, because then as we Goblins were eating out stale bread and two day old cow meat, I am up with the idea that we would learn how to use swords and daggers. This took some convincing to get all the other goblins involved, but with a little bit of effort Bar’nok and I convinced them to do so. So the next could of months while the humans and elves were out practicing and the goblin forces were suppose to be cleaning and getting dinner ready, we would sent half of the goblins to watch and mimic what the humans were doing as far as defenses with a sword. I figured if we learned to protect ourselves, we could live longer and have more get out of this army alive, and it seemed to pay off. Battle after battle, less and less of us died, while human numbers were going down increasingly, our forces stayed the same. Even in battles where we were pushed back, fewer goblins died then humans.

I spent a little of 5 years serving the lord in which owned the land my house was on, only to come home to find that someone else who was human, wanted to be the towns blacksmith and took up residences in my own getting ride of all of my belongings. Normally this would have pissed me off, but instead it gave me the reason I needed to leave that town to find a place that was more goblin friendly, or start up a small goblin community.

I spend the next 6 years traveling the country side, meeting other goblins some who served with me the army of the lord, others who had not and were just traveling Goblins like me, when I had come to a town, that from the looks of it had fallen on some hard times. I spent the first night I arrived at this town sleeping on the outskirts next to a run down empty farm house. After waking in the morning I walked into town during one of the earliest bright hours, when the sun was nearly all the way into the sky. This was something I learned a long time ago in my travels, if the sun was nearly in the sky, there was less likely a chance some human would claim you were someone other goblin who had done them wrong.

As I entered this town, something struck me as odd. No humans were attempting to sell food in the street, no animals were ridden the street. No elfin priest walked the street trying to convert men to follow their gods. No, there was no one here, not even other goblins. This town was completely deserted. I spent the next week or so searching near by towns to find out what had happen to this town, and came to the understanding that an army had come through and completely destroyed the town, killing all who lived in the town including the lord. The Humans considered the town cursed, the elves considered it unholy land so none would venture to this town, and all travelers went out of their ways to avoid this town.

This I came to determine was the perfect place for me, a place that no human or elfin lord could tell me what I had to do or where I had to live. A place where I could grow my own food, raise my own food and do as I wished. So I went back to the town, went to the castle and took up residence. As I did so I knew that I would need supplies from neighboring towns to make my home a livable place, so I visited other towns, and go my supplies. As I did this I ran across more and more goblins looking for a place to call home, so I invited them back to my town, and soon more and more came, the houses were filled up, the farms started to grow again with life, the buildings got fixed, and the stores started to open. Soon, Bar’nok came to the town with some of his friends and came up with the idea that in order to protect out town we would have to raise and army and teach all goblins who want to learn the art of war how to fight, so if any human or elfin came to take our land to take it from us we would be able to defend ourselves.

That was how we got started. It was 3 years ago give or take that we started our first fledgling army of goblins and our first town of goblins. Since then our town has grown, and so have our armies. We were able to drive away and kill with ease the humans and elves in the small towns next to ours claiming them for ourselves. It was not long before we had a medium collection of towns and villages. The Goblin forces had grown large and I knew it was not long before the lords of the lands took notice and attempted to subdue our progress. Surely the Human lords and the nasty, but tasty Elvin mages would not want any of their goblin servants to think that they could possibly be free and own a home and raise their own families.

It was not until just a few months ago that I decided to take these towns and villages and make a clan, with leadership. While we were still growing in size and taking over smaller towns and villages I decided to find a group of Goblins who should the ability to teach and lead other and younger Goblins. These Goblins I decided I would call my Gnarls, after my father; at least I think that was his name. These Gnarls would be the foundation in which this clan of War challenged Goblins would build their base. I looked for Goblins who had skills with the blade, and knowledge of human weaknesses, and who were able to resist the elfin magic. It was not as easy as it sounds, for while the Goblin all seemed to excel with the blade, none seem to have much knowledge of humans or elfin. It was then I found the most unlikely of Gnarls to help me with the elfin problems. Gnarl Coran, the only elf amongst the Goblin community. He was by far the ugliest elf you laid eyes on. When I first meat this poor beast I had to turn in disgust, I could of sworn he was a goblin with a horrid acne problem, but later I found he was a mage, and carried the powers of a mage, despite his hideousness.

While I would love to tell you more about Gnarl Coran and how he came to be, all I will say(since he’s going to tell you the rest), is that he came to us in a time of great need, and brought to us the one thing we, as goblins didn’t have. He is our protector against the magic.

The reason I say he came to us in the time of a great need was because he came to us right before the first of many lords came to siege our lands. This lord, a lord whom flew a banner of blue, came to our boards with war drums beating loudly, and with him was so large that the whole horizon was filled. Most of the warriors were men, but some were elfin, dressed in their pretty little gowns, and the rest, goblins with dull blades looking starved to the bone.

With Gnarl Coran by my side I gathered as many of the goblins who were older then the age of kobalt and we meet the forces head on. Gnarl Coran help protect us against the nasty elfin magic while we did quick order of the human warriors. Taking their swords and using them against them. The Goblin forces who opposed us quickly turned and joined us once they saw what they could have if they fought for it. A war that should have been in favor of the enemy forces quickly turned on them and no human or elfin, besides Gnarl Coran of course, left that field alive; only two Goblin warriors died. It was a good battle; one that I wish all were like, but alas from that day, no human or elfin army would trust bringing a goblin force against us again.

Thus is my story, of how I became Girk, leader of The Clan of War Challenged Goblins.

You are asking yourself now, what does Girk stand for, or better yet, how come I go by the name of Girk the leader of The Clan of War-challenged Goblins. Well like I said, there were only two Goblins who died that first battle. Both of them Goblins by chance was name Girk, so in their honor, we decided to name all the leaders we have of this clan Girk.

Now Gnarl Coran will give us his story of how he came to be in our Clan.

A LONE ELF

Hi, I'm Coran, Gnarl of Sorcery for the Clan of WarChallenged Goblins. I know what you're asking yourself..."How did an elf end up in the midst of an army of Goblins?" Well, here is my story......

I was born 52 years ago in the small elven community of Mentha Pah. There were complications during my birth. Complications that left my face deformed. At first my parents weren't bothered by my appearence, they just took solice in the fact that I would live. But by the time i was 15, and the deforties had begun to spread and worsen, my parents could hardly look at me. I was osticized by most of the village and the other children routinely harassed me. Even through all of this, I still tried to lead a somewhat normal life. I took up studying old books and began giving myself an education.

Five years later, I had learned quite alot about my people and about the land of Tonan in general. There was a town meeting being called to discuss the wars throughout Tonan and I thought I might be able to give some good input. But as I entered the town hall, all eyes turned to stare at me. Some stared in disgust, others with open hostility. You see, the wars were advancing toward our village and they needed someone to blame. I had become sort of a bad omen to my people. Even my own parents thought me a curse. Everyone was against, everyone save one. One of the town elders, Beriark Nove(a man most thought a loon), took pity on me. He led me away from the hall and back to his home. Talking with Beriark on the way, I thought him a bit out there myself but he wanted to help me and I was willing to take any kindness offered. Beriark wanted to teach me about magic. You see, Beriark had no children of his own and wanted to pass on his knowledge to someone. He figured passing on that knowledge to me might help give me a purpose in the village, thus gaining more acceptance. I trained diligantly under Beriark for 10 years when tragedy struck. The wars that had wracked the land had come within miles of the village. With the prospect of defending ourselves imminent, Beriark decided to teach me some offensive magic. During a rather complicated chain lightning spell, the forces I was wielding became to great. A massive explosion sent me flying. I roused out of my haze about 15 minutes later. As a shakily rose to my feet, I looked around. The devastation was great. Buildings lie in ruin and several bodies littered the ground, including that of my teacher and only real friend, Beriark. This was the last straw for the leaders of the village. I was a plague that needed removing. I grabbed Beriark's spell bokk and several scrolls he had and fled my village with several of the town protectors in pursuit. I ran as far and as fast as I could but everytime i looked over my shoulder, I could see them gaining, swords in hand. I noticed not to far off ahead of me, dust was being stirred. Alot of dust.......a battle. I headed straight for it. Seeing where I was headed, the protectors of Mentha Pah decided to break off pursuit. Having lost them, I made my way away from the battle and found a place to rest. I almost cried at my situation. I had no family, I had no people, and I had killed the one person who had showed me any kindness. Lost, I gathered up what strength I had left and began to walk.

18 Years I wandered aimlessly. Living wherever I could find a place to sleep, eating out of refuse piles and what small amounts I could scavenge from the surrounding countryside. I still studied Beriark's spell book and read the scrolls over and over again. I practiced when I was away from civilation. Until I could completely master my craft, I would not dare another accident. I eventually found myself a nice cave outside of a fairly proseperous town. I decorated it with thrown out furniture and lived off scraps outside of the inns. Hunting was ok so occasion I ate a nice cooked rabbit or a pheasant that had wandered in to the crude traps I set up. I had lived in that cave for nearly 4 years when the amry came. I stood at the mouth of my cave, looking down upon the village. This army left nothing in it's wake. People were slaughtered in the street. I watched as the army looted and plundered the local lords castle. I stood horrified as I watched elfs unleash wave upon wave of sorcery upon the people of that town.

After the army had moved on, I made my way down to the town. No one had been spared. After the initial shock wore off, reality set in. I would no longer have the inns throw outs to live off of. I began gathering everything I could and brought it back to my cave. For months I was alone on my hill. I would just look down at the town and shake my head. The people of that village didn't seem a bad people, it was truly a shame. Then, one day I seen someone enter the village. A lone man. He was big, much to big for elven and he even seemed large for a human. I crept down quitely to get a better look. This....creature was not human. As he was studying it, it suddenly hit him. This was a Goblin. He had only read about them in the books back in Mentha Pah. They were described as ugly, viscous creatures with no compassion. The goblin had not seen him yet, so he eased his way back up the hill to his cave.

Several months passed and the goblin returned frequently, occassionally with other goblins. It appeared that these goblins were taking up residence in this town. I thought wryly to myself Great, there goes the neighborhood. I decided to go down and check exactly what was going on in the town. As I watched from my place of cover, the goblins went about daily routines. I watched as these creatures performed the same basic tasks any human or elf community would. I returned several times to watch my new neighbors. These goblins didn't seem the malicious, hate filled beings that were portrayed in those books. I went back to my cave satisfied that things might actually get back to normal. I had a community to help sustain me again.

One day, I was awoken from sleep by noise outside my cave. It was footsteps and they were coming closer. In a panic, I grabbed the staff I had carved for myself and hid behind a couch I had dragged up the hill. I thought frantically for an offensive spell to cast. That's when he entered the cave. The ogre that had come on his own to the town below was standing in my cave. I rose from behind the couch, ready to defend myself. The goblin noticed me immediately. I had had a small lamp burning and upon seeing my features, the goblin crooked his head, as if in study.

From that first meeting with Ciroc, I had known him to be a being of great intelligence. Odd, for them books I read also stated the dim witted nature of goblins. Ciroc took me in and gave me an actual house to live in. When I would walk amongst the goblins, no one laughed or pointed. Some even waved to me. After weeks of living amongst the goblins, I began to realize I may have actually found a place I could call home. I met with Ciroc often and eventually came to trust him as a friend. And when war threatened to come to this town again, I offered my knowledge of magic to aid my new family. Seeing as none of the goblins knew near as much as I when it came to magic. Ciroc decided to put me in charge of all things sorcery.

.....And that is how I became a Gnarl of the Clan of War Challenged Goblins. I love my new brethren and would do anything for them. And they are really funny people too......once you get use to thier since of humor.
