Death.......A word we don’t face until we have to, but I have seen Death. Not that of men or the loss of a loved one, although I have seen those terrible things too, no I have seen Death standing before me and I truly knew terror.

It was a spring day, a beautiful spring day, the sun was high in the sky and the land was ripe with new growth. Men and women from my village were working the fields. I still remember it like it was yesterday………

If only I could drink enough to end that memory.

I was sitting on a grassy hill just above the village painting a picture of the village and its people working around It.

You see that’s what I was, a painter.

When I heard the far off sound of thunder. I should have known something was wrong for there was not a cloud for miles in the bright sunny sky. I ignored it at first thinking it was nothing, but steadily it grew closer and closer. It wasn’t long before the people in the fields noticed it to, every where people stopped working and listened. The sound went on for what seemed hours, growing closer and closer, but it couldn’t have been but a few minutes. Then suddenly from over the hill behind me the dragons appeared, hundreds of them, they flew so low to the ground I could almost touch them as they passed overhead. They flew with such frightening speed they laid the tall grass and wheat in the fields down in their path. I was blown to the ground as they passed by, I looked up to see others that had not yet ran were also being blown over in the fields.

I raised myself up to my knees before I heard the sound of crashing hooves behind me and then I saw them. Row upon row of mounted troops, they crashed down on me and I thought that moment was my end, but they broke around me like a giant wave on a single rock and ebbed around me on down the hill towards the village. I watched helplessly as they ran down or slaughtered every man they came across, soon they were through the fields and into the village. I watched as houses caught fire and listened to the screaming of people.….People I once called friends, neighbors.

I sat there on my knee’s watching the devastation. The once fertile fields were nothing more then muddy spaces where bodies laid now. I could see the village burning almost all of it in golfed then I felt something, someone was beside me....

I looked to my right and there it was, the blackest horse I had ever seen, it must have been the size of a warhorse. Sitting on it was a man, possibly slender and maybe 6 foot but it was hard to tell. It was so hard to focus on him. He wore a black full-length cloak or possibly a robe with a large hood that hid everything about him. I was afraid at first, afraid he would notice me and order his men to come back and finish me to. But soon my fear turned to anger and I stood up and shouted at him.

How dare he send his men here to kill innocents, how dare he butcher and murder those that could not hope to defend themselves.

I made it about that far when I heard voices behind me lots of them, I spun around to see the Lord sitting upon his horse with what looked like some generals and a few messengers running back and forth with orders. The lord did not have the pleased smile on his face one would expect from a butcher, no, he looked sad, and tired like maybe he had seen to much blood shed this day. I noticed he wore the crest of Barnabas and I knew why on this day his army’s fell upon my peaceful village. I stood there for a moment contemplating what had befallen the poor people of Leto in the village when a strange thought hit me. Who was standing beside me?

The realization hit me all at once and I knew what it was sitting there what it was in all its awfulness. We hear stories of death, of the terror it brings, of the pain and suffering and in that moment I was standing beside it. I fell to the ground with a whimper. All the energy gone from me, I kicked and a trashed backwards trying to get away from this thing when suddenly he turned his head towards me like he had just noticed I was there. It froze me there. I tried to turn around and get up to run, but I just couldn’t find the strength. And then he spoke. It was not the scratchy wicked voice I had expected, it was almost pleasant but not quit, more neutral and old….so old. I will never forget what he said to me.

Today is not your day mortal.

So matter of fact, with out any emotion. I stopped and looked at him more out of morbid curiosity then anything. The hood was so dark like a pit. I could make out the soft blue glow that must have been his eyes, not intense and not the demon red I had so long heard. As his head tilted a little more the sun shined for just a second across his chin. It was flesh, pale though, like the sun shined on it but never really touched it. And then he turned back to the village and his great horse started to walk away. Then he paused and turned back to me. He cocked his head only slightly as if puzzled and then spoke to me again.

You are the only mortal to ever notice us follower of Leto. For this I will grant you the question you asked earlier. We do not bring anything that is not supposed to be, we do not decide who lives and dies, that is beyond us. Good and evil is a mortal concept and we have never been mortal. We bring forth that which has to be.

He started to turn and leave again when I in spite of my better judgment shouted out.

Who was he or they to decide who lives and dies.It was not fair.that I was still here when so many others had died.

He stopped again a few feet away, when he spoke there was no anger at being questioned, there was no emotion, no he just sat on that massive black horse for a moment before speaking.

You are alive today because your path has not yet been walked. Who do you think it was that broke the army’s around you, or the reason why your only feet away from the lord of that army yet are still alive. Death only comes to those whose time has come. Not everyone in that village has died on this day, some will live on as you have, others will die in the night as pestilence and famine come to do there deed. This is all that can be said.

With that he just turned and rode off without even giving me a glance. As he made his way down the hill towards what once was my village I seen others like him but not like him. One moving amongst the dead and dieing, one moving across the once lush fields that was no more. I ran then, I ran so hard I thought I would die from exhaustion and he would come for me. I spend my time waiting now, waiting for the day when the army’s of Barnabas come through the next town or village I am in and for that day when its
"My day".

AGM’s can not refuse a candidate that has been nominated then voted in as an AGM.
