The air is crisp out tonight, I remark, sitting underneath a star-veiled sky. I pull out my occulus, and survey the field before me. The thought passes through my head, like a jolt of electricity: battle will be joined soon.
Battle is inevitable. Only the weak and the mundane come to conclusions separate of this; and, though battle may be inevitable, only the truly enlightened understand that battle comes in many guises. But this is one night where the brutal, overt and direct forms would be what faced EvilElmo - but not what faced his enemies. And it is for this that I smile.
What passed for warfare was becoming increasingly vague: the internecine feuds and skirmishes that were becoming increasingly common, and which were, equally, becoming more sophisticated, did not escape the eye of any commander of Tonan. Such conflicts, between the various body politiks of an enemy, were encouraged, though only overtly so. Shipments of arms, information and intelligence, the occasional assassination - these were the methods used to keep confusion and disorder as rife as possible among the enemy camps.
Among all this, law, the basis of civilization, was breaking down to an ever greater extent. As the various alliances became evermore fragmented and inward looking, the commonalities which had once given rise to the greatness of Tonan were disappearing. Mediation between two sides in a conflict, whether inter- or intra-alliance, was becoming ever more difficult, as common ground erroded and societies grew apart.
And, upon this, I will capitalize. Power would be maintained by a forced serparation of societies; no single power would ever be able to challenge his power, and, loosely affiliated, they would adhere to the general direction of the will of Barnabas. It will be a time of new law and new justice: the conventions which had been held so long, will shatter, and Barnabas will rejoice in its newfound glory. The clan which he would lead would achieve victory not through superior positions, but by the utter destruction of their enemies. The new rules were being written; all would heed them.
No longer will the large millitary alliances dominate and dispense justice! No longer!
With this, the fledgeling clans that he commanded erupted upon the overextended forces which had entered the valley, the unexpected nature of the assault evident as the ranks of the enemy collapsed, and their armies were routed.
