"It is said that, on the eve of a great naval invasion some decades ago in Tonan's history, the great admiral of the defending nation was playing bowls on a high hill above the harbour. Upon being informed about the progress of the opposing fleet, the man shrugged and turned back to his game, knowing that the tides were against his enemy and that they could not close to engage until some hours later in the day.

"It would be naieve of me to suggest that this heralded a schism in military theory, or that anyone really paid much notice to it beyond cheering the man when he managed to fight off the foreign navy the next day - but his method was very much taken to heart by the rulers of our lands, children. Why interrupt a quality game of bowls to go and fight a battle, when you could put that distasteful duty off until the next morning?

"Indeed, why fight the battle at all if you can get someone else to do it for you? That one key idea, my friends, was taken to heart by our benevolent rulers and explains much of our actions towards our fellow nations. We do not fight, we pay other people to fight for us. We do not confront an enemy on the field of battle and waste of all of that energy, all of those young lives who could otherwise be playing a really good game of bowls, we bankrupt the enemy and ruin his reputation with those who would line up next to him.

"Why bother expending energy acting directly when it's much more fun to manipulate people into getting tired on our behalf? Why both-"

One child at the back of the class raised his hand.

"Yes, child?"

"Shouldn't we be willing to get tired and fight in the name of Isonia?"

The old man at the front of class sighed, and shook his head in exasperation.

"We've gone over this before, haven't we Joshua? There are people far more warlike than our gentle nation - let them excel at what they want to do, and we'll do what we like as well. We benefit our Goddess just as much as they do - merely in different manners."

"And if we want to fight, sir?"

The old man looked at Joshua curiously for a long moment, and then waved a dismissive hand at him.

"Yes, well, that's quite enough of that I think. You're far too much like your father for your own good, I'm afraid. If you want to fight you can either do so in the shadows and join the Foreign Ministry, or if you WILL insist on standing in big lines in loud clanking armour, you can always either enlist with the royal guard or one of the mercenary units which occasionally come by to collect their pay. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to pick up a fresh-faced idealist such as yourself."

"For everyone else, though - remember that our catch phrase is that if it's worth doing well, it's worth getting someone in who's trained to do it better. The only things we have over our neighbours are our natural wealth, and our cunning - and we use them both to devastating effect. Hiring mercenaries, prompting rumours of war from other directions, and sowing discord are our tools, and happily for us they rarely require us to leave the city - and barely ever require us to risk our lives on some damn fool battleground with only a few feet of blade to seperate us from those slavering fools who worship the Gods who started this war in the first place."

"Don't mistake our lack of physical presence for weakness, or lack of zealousness in following Isonia's word. She is the goddess of equality, and we revel in the fact that our intelligence balances out their combat readiness and bloodlust. Use your head rather than your sword arm, and worship Isonia as the only true deity in this land. Remember that once this war settles down, as wars across the land inevitably will, they will look to INTELLIGENCE rather than brute strength for leadership and ongoing counsel - and that, my children and students, is where we will come into our own. We will wear the crowns, and they will stand at our feet awaiting our command. You will have dominion over them all - Joshua sadly included. Class dismissed."

New guild!

Rules of Membership:
As the charter might highlight, we're a laid back guild. I don't expect this guild to rule at the top of the rankings with an iron fist and superfluffed megakingdoms, but I do expect us to have an occasional impact on the game, and the long term capability to affect the rankings in more than one way. If you can play your turns regularly and if you can be good friends with our existing membership, you're probably the kind of player we're looking for. Just don't expect to be covered in glory.

Ranking system:
GM - self explanatory. The GM, the leader of the guild, aka Me. Final decisions rest with the GM, but a lot of power will be delegated.

AGM - only two or three assistants will be appointed, to share out some of the workload. Any of them will be trusted to lead the guild in all senses of the phrase if the GM is absent or just offline.

Everyone else - all members will be trusted until they prove they shouldn't be (in which case they will be removed from the guild, and other Isonian guilds will be warned).

Of course, if anyone wants to try taking on a bit more responsibility, we'll most likely be happy to give you a go. Otherwise there won't be much promotion, since everyone will largely be on the same level.

If the GM disappears:
If the GM is offline and a decision needs making, an AGM can make that decision. If the GM is absent for 4 or more days without prior warning, the AGMs will take control of the guild and if necessary will ask for help from amongst the guild roster. If the GM is gone for a week or more, a new GM will be elected and will select a new AGM team.

We do, of course, expect everyone to follow the rules of TB:

1. Do not make an ass of yourself.
2. Do not post bug reports on the baords, over ICQ, or in IRC, unless specifically asked to by staff.
3. Do not spam or post redundant messages.
4. Do not post kingdom numbers or kingdom names on the boards.
5. Pornography, piracy, or other illegal material is not allowed.
6. Do not post links or advertizements to hate or anti-Evernight sites. This includes racial, ethical, or sexually related sites.
7. Do not post accusations of cheating on the boards.

Other than that, we ask that our guild members retain a lighthearted approach to the game. Even if we suffer from bad hits and bad attitude from our opponents, I expect my members to be able to bite their tongue - or their typing fingers - and remain civil. It's only that which will maintain a good atmosphere within the forum, and a good reputation within the game.

Hope to have your application in soon!
