COLE
THE
VANGUARD OF FORET
From the dawning of time, the people of the Lithanian Empire had lived
a life of peace,
love and justice and almost idyllic prosperity under the guidance of
the
Council.
Never did they face strife or hunger or plague in those golden years.
Faithful to Council,
the Free Lithanians had continued life as it had always been since the
beginning. Rising early,
working long days and worshiping the gods of Nature and Justice, the
Free, as they had become
to be called, lived a life of rustic simplicity. Their lands knew no
great armies or war chiefs.
Instead farmers, artisans and scholars were revered. In those days,
before the
Day of Creation
,when all Gods were revealed to us, the maker of a pot could be
accounted among the great of
the land. This was the time of peace. The prophets created in time of
Formation
, had not
yet begun to strive against each other. Harmony ruled the
lives of every living creature.
With the coming of the Goblin races that began to change. Kobold,
Ogre, Troll, Giant and Changeling
all seemed to have one purpose; to slay and destroy the Free. No one
knows how the Goblin race came
to infest the mountains on our borders but it is now thought that the
foul one, called
Darden
drew
them to us for his base amusement. Their coming brought an end to the
time of peace. Rumours told
that a Darden villager was murdered by a Foret warrior over a woman.
This was called
"The Simple Sin"
.
More Sins would follow. Fires burned along our borders. Villages and
Townships were ransacked
by the Goblins. Were it not for the best prophet and heir to
Foret
, our lands would
have fallen in ruin. Appearing in dreams before a select group of
young warriors,
he called upon them to take up arms in defense of the land. In small
bands they
collected together, trained and learned armsmanship, all under the
tutelage of
Foret
. Choosing to dress only in shades of blue, black and green and
marching under a blue banner they began to push the goblins back into
the mountains.
Lifetakers and Killers they were called at first and people eyed them
strangely.
But, as they gave up their lives in service to the land, they began to
call themselves
Lithanian Shadows. And wherever the goblin hordes threatened,
Lithanian Shadows
marched and bled.
Gradually, they pushed the goblins back into the mountains and then
over them.
A chain of strongholds was established to bottle the Goblin hordes up
in the mountains.
And peace reigned again, again the years passed long and slow and
gradually contact with
the Goblin race become more a matter for traders than for warriors.
A few strongholds, those dedicated mostly to the prophet
Foret
, remained as a refuge for those
who could not abide the slow and peaceful pace of life.
These citadels, placed on the mountain borders of the Free Lithanians,
guarded the Free
from the occasional ravages of the Goblin tribes and served as the
only true army of the Free.
When the
Last Sin
occurred all ended that. For with the
fall of the unity of the Gods,
came the fall of the Free Lithanians and the beginning of our tale.
With the disorder in the lands of
Tonan
were many of the priests in the Citadel struck down
by terrifying fits of madness. These fits eventually ended the life of
the priests within a few months.
The few surviving priests, overwhelmed by the struggle to care for
their stricken brethren, were
unable to provide guidance to our people.
Indeed many, exhausted beyond belief by their efforts, sunk into
depression and left their
temples to wander the world searching for some meaning to the tragedy.
There was a lack
of order and justice and chaos everywhere. Simple love was turning
into hatred!
Into this spiritual void came the False. Offering lies for substance,
the priests of
Darden
and
Isonia
came crying of murder and the guilt of
Foret
in the fall of The
Council
. At first,
like spiders building a web, they only called for a place to offer
worship to their gods. And,
woe to us all, it was given. Then they began to call forth to the
people to repudiate the ways
that had made the Free Lithanians the haven of peace it had been.
Prophet argued with prophet
all in a search for lost faith. Once established with a strong base of
followers, they began
to call for a purge of those who would follow the few remaining
priests of
Foret
. Our leaders,
unused to the perversions that dark faith can bring and horrified by
the destruction of
so many of our own spiritual leaders, acquiesced. And so began the
thrice horning,
the dark hunt.
The universities were closed, and the followers of
Foret
fled into the wilds and to the
citadels of the prophet of integrity and justice. Those who survived
that is - for many
were caught and tortured to confess their property and their friends.
Meanwhile, in the
villages and towns, chaos was king. Not satisfied with forcing the
followers of
Foret
out of their homes and endeavors, the False began wide scale
persecution of any who
did not follow their own beliefs. So now, priest of
Isonia
warred with priest of
Darden
and woe to any who refused them.
This was the time of the burnings, when mere speech in earshot of a
priest would cause
entire families to be flung into the bonfires of the purge. Many
sought refuge in dark
thieves cribs and became thieves themselves.
And the armies came. Gold clad and red, they stormed the villages and
towns, looted
the rich farms and devoured the fruits of centuries of careful
breeding.
Vineyards a thousand years old, were trampled to make room for the
camps and blood
drenched the fields in a vast outpouring of false faith. The people
were forced to
serve the warlords of
Isonia
and
Darden
in their wars, while the priests stripped
our land of its wealth.
The years of oppression blended one into the other and still the wars
continued.
The Free Lithanians became a land of ruin where assassins openly
walked the streets
of the towns. Gold clad
Darden
mages cast spells twisting
the land and the people
in vile fashion, while bands of unwashed
Isonia
priests stalked the land beating,
burning and stoning any who defied their rabid dictates.
Famine stalked our villages and the once rich farmlands became
deserts. Plague
become our companion. Our leaders died by the hand of assassin or
death spell or simple exhaustion.
But the people survived. And, slowly, resistance began. With no
leadership
left, common men and women became heros. Our people fought in small
ways and
in many small battles. A poisoned well became a victory, a dead priest
a triumph.
The people burned the houses that they took from us and, when they
threw more
people out to make room for their priests and their soldiers, those
houses
burned as well. We poisoned the grain that the False fed to their
horses.
Even the scum of our land joined in and made the night a battleground.
But the land continued it’s slow death.
Finally, a prophet arose amongst us. His true name is unknown but to
all of us, he
is just called the Whitecloak. Given a vision from the prophet
Foret
himself, the
Whitecloak devoted his life to the spread of the words of
Foret
as passed down
directly to him. Traveling from woods to village to citadel, he
convinced the
people that
Foret
was the true prophet who would bring back an age of stability,
peace and justice. He further codified the laws given us by
Foret
into what we live by now.
Meanwhile, collecting every able man and woman who could fight, the
armies of the
Free met the armies of
Isonia
in a great struggle.
For a week the struggle continued
with neither side being able to gain the upper hand. The mad fanatics
of
Isonia
threw
themselves repeatedly upon the ranks of the free. Attack followed
attack and blood
pooled in rusty brown lakes across the fields. But the Free could
not be broken by any mortal arms.
To this scene of carnage came the gold clad cohorts of
Darden
. The battle crazed
followers of
Isonia
turned their full wrath upon their old enemy while the Free
paused for a moment to commend their dead to
Foret
.
Suddenly, led by the Grand Martial, the Free charged forth against
both armies.
Many a heathen was struck down that day. And, for a moment, victory
was in our grasp.
But the struggle was not to be determined by human hands. Into the
maelstrom of war
strode the lazy one,
Darden
, and his rabid neighbour,
Isonia
. But
Foret
had not
forsaken the Free. Assuming the shape of a great flame he charged
towards the
other prophets. Both
Isonia
and
Darden
sped towards him as well. When they met
it was as if the heavens had broken asunder. The ground was riven and
fire
flowed from it. Winds swept all aside before them. For leagues around,
fire
and earthquake and Lightning lashed the armies with their fury. Fully
a third of the land of the Free Lithanians was blasted that day. Of
our
ranks, only 3 score survived and those only by the mercy of
Foret
- for in his wisdom and his might he hurled us far from the
devastation.
Shakily we picked ourselves up and looked to see where we were. None
of us had
any rank or any other great merit other than our faith in
Foret
, but from
that day we knew ourselves to be the chosen, the elect of
Foret
. And, as we
surveyed the destruction of so much of our lands we swore never again.
Our
lands would never be violated, our people never so reduced. We would
form
an order devoted to the Charges of
Foret
and go forth into the world to
protect all the people from the False, and rule in love and justice.
We would become the shadows that struck down the dishonorable and the
darkness
that cloaked the people in a protective shroud. To the heathen who
would violate
our faith we would become Death. To the honorable we would become a
shield.
We would become
The Lithanian Shadows
.
The years passed .The land has healed and the people have reclaimed
their simple lives.
The Free Lithanians have again became a home to the simple and
hardworking. Our fields
again are the pride of all of the lands in
Tonan
. But the center of our lives has
become the Lord of Integrity. Our Artisans have erected temples to him
in every
city, though true to our memory of
Foret
as the god of integrity and justice,
they are also armories and citadels as well as centers of worship. One
day in 10,
the people gather in the Citadel to worship
Foret
in both prayer and training...prayers
to worship, training to protect the worship. And through the centuries
Lithanian Shadows
have guarded the Citadel.
We are the wardens of the Citadel. We march while the threat of the
False is merely a
touch of smoke in the wind and before it can become a conflagration
endangering the
Free. Our duty is to
Foret
, to the Free Lithanians and to each other.
We are going to destroy The False, determined to become the last group
of mortals
standing on top of the Citadel.
Let the final battles begin!
