Thenician closed his eyes and tried to ignore the sounds all around him. Sounds of doors slamming shut. Sounds of a dozen armed soldiers scattering in several directions. The sounds of those same soldiers kicking open those same doors. Followed by the sounds of people inside their homes screaming. But trying to ignore them only seemed to make them louder, so he reopened his eyes and returned his attention to the mission.
It was early evening, so it wasn't as if they were barging in on people sleeping. Just barging in on people trying to keep them out. Thenician looked down the narrow dirt road of the village, small houses with broken doors on either side of it. A large house could be seen at the end of the road. Hardly a mansion by conventional standards, but given the size and complexity of the village, it was probably the mayor's or other wealthy leader. It was certainly the largest. As he looked at it he could feel the darkness within him swell and roar at it.
"My lord!" The voice of his adjutant snapped him back into focus and he turned to face him. He was a pale skinned young man named Jiiren Voss, probably in his early twenties, wearing the lightweight dark colored armor of Thenician's squad and a small black and purple band on his sleeve with the Bonelotus insignia. "Some of the villagers are escaping through back doors, shall I send the men after them?"
Thenician turned his head to try and look around the back of some of the houses, and sure enough people were running away. "There is no need." He said, turning his attention back to the big house at the end of the road. "She's in there. Call the men back."
Jiiren immediately pulled a flare gun from the holster on the small of his back, spun the cylinder until the correct charge was in place, and fired it into the sky. A bright blue light painted the sky and a single crack of thunder roared from it, and everything that could be seen glowed in shades of blue for a few brief seconds before returning to normal. The technology available to the Bonelotus still amazed Thenician, and he had to remind himself that he was older than he appeared, and times had changed.
He sighed, and smiled to himself before taking his first step in the direction of the house. A step that made all the little gears and gizmos in his suit of armor start whining faintly as they came to life. It was the clockwork suit of armor given to him by the Bonelotus for completing his first assignment. It was a necessity at first, since the dark power would take decades to restore the strength of his youth, and it would be risky to have an aging man in the field. He resented the suit, feeling that it only reminded him of the frailty he came to undo. But in time he came to appreciate the advantages it provided. The suit carried its own weight, so he could move as if completely unencumbered. It had great strength that was entirely at his disposal to do with as he pleased, and a great amount of magical augments he had added himself over the years.
Thinking of this, he held his right hand in front of him and looked at the palm of the gauntlet as he continued to march toward the house. The suit was made of a black metal, or at least tinted black by magical means, as were many things created by the Bonelotus, but the right hand gauntlet was a replacement Thenician added himself. A treasure from his past life, altered and made to fit in his new life. And in the center of the palm of this golden gauntlet was set a small bluish purple spherical gem. An even greater treasure, also altered so he could keep it with him. The thought awakened a sadness and resentment in him that made his inner darkness howl.
By the time Thenician arrived at the house, the rest of his squad had rejoined him. The dozen soldiers stood abreast behind him with only his adjutant to his left. He took one further step forward, reasserting his position as one who leads from the front.
"Reena Daystar!" He called out. "If you do not surrender, my men will destroy this village and every living soul belonging to it." Only silence seemed to follow the echo of his voice. Suddenly he felt the dark power within him trying to reach further behind the house, the around to the left, then finally up some. "A rooftop ambush?" He shouted sarcastically as he turned his head to face the direction of the nearest roof to the left. "So unseemly."
His attention was drawn immediately to her golden hair as it glowed fiery red in the setting sun and seemed to dance like an open flame in the wind. She wore a form fitted body suit that left little to the imagination but likely provided decent protection and excellent mobility. Against her shoulder, she rested a simple looking katana. It had no guard to speak of, and barely a handle, though it was just a dusty brown leather ribbon wrapped around the tang.
"You must be Thenician Dusk." She shouted cockily from the rooftop. "So they sent you after me this time? I wonder what they think and old fool like you can do to me?"
"Fifty years ago there would've been plenty I could do to you." He replied in the same cocky tone. "But today I'll have to settle for simply doing my job. So will you come without resistance? Or shall my men turn this village into a tiny burnt scab on the land?"
"It seems we have a problem then. I don't intend to let you harm a single person in this village. But I have no intention of going back with you either."
"That is a problem." Thenician replied. He could feel the dark power trying to claw its way to to try and strike her. "But I've always tried to think of myself as a bit of a diplomat. So I have a suggestion to solve our problem."
"Huh?" She muttered with a confused expression on her face.
"Trust me, you won't be able to resist." He said with an eager grin.
"Well out with it then, old man!"
"You will fight me, one on one. If you kill me, my men will become your men, and the next time the organization sends someone after you, you wont need to cower behind villagers."
"The fuck did you say!?" She shouted as she lunged from the roof to attack. The expression of offense clear on her face.
With a thought, Thenician activated the mechanism on his armor that released the huge sword on his back. It remained attached to a tiny mechanical arm that allowed it to swing down in such a way that the sword's handle would stop between his right hand and his hip. As soon as he grasped the sword, the mechanical arm released it and returned to its default position. So within a second of thinking it, his sword was between him and his attacker, ready to parry.
The sound of steel striking steel signaled the start of the fight. Thenician easily blocked Reena's attack with his sword, then quickly pushed her aside using the blocked position thanks to the immense strength awarded by his armor. "What are you trying to do?" He mocked. "Knock on old man down? Kids these days, I tell you."
"Shut up you old bastard!" She shouted, finally stabilizing her footing after being swatted away. "I'll take your damn deal."
Reena ran to attack again, and again she was blocked. When Thenician tried to swat her away again though, she parried under his sword and tried to thrust at his throat. Since the fight began he had only moved his right arm, now he had to quickly reach with his left to catch the blade. Grasping it, he quickly pulled it toward him while turning his sword in his right hand to point down as he thrust it into the ground between him and Reena. Reflexively, she released her sword and jumped back.
Thenician twirled the katana in his left hand around a little, which looked like a pencil compared to his sword, then planted it on the ground behind him and stepped slowly toward Reena.
"I see close combat with you is out of the question." She commented.
"After only two tries? You're a quick learner."
"I have alternatives." She quickly put her hands forward and began some complex motion while vocalizing the words to a spell. Thenician had just enough time to smile before being struck in the chest with a fireball. The fireball exploded, as they tend to do, and the flaming cloud vanished as quickly as it had materialized. Thenician stood there, exactly as he had been before the attack.
"A quick learner, indeed." He said, exhaling a cloud of black smoke.
