Clan, bloodline, in essence they are one in the same. Just inconsiquential semantics.
Reason why I suggested an addition to rule 3 was to stray away from what media, and other authors have published (Ann Rice comes to mind). You do have a good point about blood being everything to folklore based vampires. Also the fact that to keep bloodlines/clans pure by shareing their blood to refuel the next of kin.
However, I suggest a different approach to look at vampires. Yes, it would be sufficient to keep one or two of the different clans as blood liniage. Yet we have the power to create a new way to view how vampires feed themselves and procreate. Best example I could give would be the Vixin. A form of female vampire that its main qualities include seduction and charming. How they could get their sustinance could be from a form of energy drain. Whenever they kiss, touch or conduct acts of sensual desire they could be draining an individual of their life spark. They do not nescisarily have to convert this life force into a form of youth enhancment. Rather they use it as food as a classic vampire needs blood to hold their strength. As for procreation, the Vixin could just as easily (since they could be all about life energy), simply share a piece of their immortal soul/energy with their target to create another of their kind. So think of it this way, the Vixin for centuries have been shareing the same essence of their founder. This could create a deep seeted dark religion about their kind, which in turn leads towards a whole new addition to the Vixin portion of the vampire section.
More examples to come...
Before we step any further into the subject of the manual I should clarify what I had originaly planned for it.
The Faith Hills History Manual (This name will most likely change in the future to reflect the true meaning of the manual), is meant to be a gathering of details about the past and present of this huge story. To be more exact, details meaning:
-Special Land formations
ex: Tower of light. why it was built. Who built it. Special functions. A few details about who occupied and perhaps even details of a few rooms within.
-Gods
ex: Gods name. Where it resides. Symbols of the god. Common worshipers of the god. What is the gods function in the world. The gods part in past events. The gods part in current events.
-Races
For each section of the races, you will have the main header of the race: ex: Vampires, a description of vampires in general will follow suit. Afterwards, the vampire section will be split up into the catagories of different types of vampires. Ex: Vixin, Bloodleaf etc... Under the new headers, it will go into more intemate detail about them. Such as, Description of this certain type of race, things that make it unique to the others. Residential behavior (Do all stay in one place, if so where? Or are they nomadic? Or are they split up yet stay in a single place etc...). The Subraces behavioral patterns, Ex: Vixins sedduce victems and they become their slaves. Races cultural interests. Status heiarchy in culture if any at all. Forms of religion. Military, if they have then a little description of how it works. The status of magic in their society, is it a big influence, small influence, no influence. Diplomatic stance towards the other races. And last but not least, the subraces part in history. And their part in the present.
-Locations
ex: Faith Hills (before it was destroyed). A graphic image of the city/town/village couldn't hurt. Different cultures that reside. Perhaps go into a little detail about their commerce. Population total (which can be split into a number of different graphs and charts showing different things like race, gender etc...). Ruling council. Law enforcment. Crime. Guilds. Heh heh heh. Maybe even throw in a few ads to make the overall experience more nifty.
-Famous Events/Heroes/Relics
This section could give descriptions of heroes of the past or present. Famous events like wars of the past. Maybe even write a little bit of what we all have done too.
-Timeline
Create a timeline bar and place famous events etc on it so everything can be set straight if needed.
-Bonuses
The whole reason why this section exists is because of what you had suggested Jake. Here is what I had thought of for this section. Everyone, or maybe even a select few will RP a seperate story that recollects about, lets say, How Faith Hills was built, how it became the capital city of the Land of Faith etc... And when the story is complete, edit everything together so that the outcome appears much like a journal, or a bards tale book. So this bonus is pretty much a book within a book giving the manual an even better feel to it. This can be done many times to explore and expand the main history.
I know making somthing this huge is ALOT of work. But the end result will leave all of us satisfied with what it can do. Although I know that a small portion of fun writing here has been creating new things about the world, I personaly feel that enough is enough of simply pulling things out of my butt. I felt that the things mentioned above need to be more structured. Although events of the past that will be printed in the manual are set in stone, future additions are not. If a race changes its diplomatic stance with another, then at the end of that saga, the manual will be updated. New land formations, end of saga update. New race, end of saga update. You get the drift. I hope that with the completion, or near completion of the manual, it will add to the story rather than hinder it. It should make things more sophisticated in a way that the things characters mention, or places they visit, can go into further detail then a simple improvision. ALSO, help new additions to our RP team get familiar with the land and its people. Im not too sure if it will place any restrictions on the characters they can make (I was gunna say restriction on making a new race, but just remember what I said above, end of saga update). But we can add another section to the above of somthing like New Player Help etc...
Even though I have mentioned a mouthfull of sensory input, it does not mean just jump right in and tackle everything at once. Jake, you actualy have the right idea in that creating a basic outline of the race and then building upon it. And to make things go along faster, I suggest that we both tackle the same thing at the same time. Such as my debate above about the vampires. Once we have the entire section of the vampire race and its subraces complete, then we can move onto the other areas (Might I suggest we stick to completing races first?). (I dun know why, but this section I have gone over a dozen times, and no matter how many times I rephrase it or edit words, it always seems to come out a tad condescending. So please excuse me if it comes off like that to yourself.)
As for the compilation of what has been written thus far, tomorrow (rather this evening), I will create a webpage with everything on it so it will be more easily found and read. It may not be a message board, but it is the next best thing.
Which brings me to the next thing that needs to be mention. I would also like to suggest a better place to hold the conversation for the manual. Somehow it seems that the discussion for it can become quite extensive and requires a bit of room. For the time being our OOC thread, and email will have to do. However, if anyone comes across a hosting site with 10+ MB of space + CGI support, or a hosting site that includes a message board in it, then please share the link. I have a message board script on my computer which can be used if a hosting site with CGI support is found. A real pity that my hypermart account was erased because it could have held the boards.
With that all said and done, I will be back with a few more examples to expand upon the vampire subraces. Also, Jake, if ye have a form of instant messenger that would also help this project come along alot faster. My profile has all of my contacts, although I spend a majority of my time on MSN since I am hiding from other people on ICQ and AIM.
