The Saltwood Chronicles (OOC)

Postby Thenician » Sat Sep 19, 2009 11:55 am

Alright, I still have no idea what we're doing here. But hopefully as I get these thoughts down they will become coherent in my mind. All I really have right now is a few characters and bits and pieces of story, so let's get started. I'm going to use this OOC as many others do to post some character details so I don't have to explain it later.

Name: Thenician Dusk
Age: 81 (Appears 50)
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 170 lbs.
Physique: Athletic (Shows signs of "apparent" age.)

Employment History
Current: Bonelotus Agent (26 years)
Previous: Captain, Rehal's Sunset, Ship + Mercenary Co. (30 years)
Previous: Lieutenant, Dahlien Private Security Co., under Rehal Dahlien (3 years)
Previous: Ensign, Irmallian Navy, aboard INV Jackal (6 years)
Previous: Student, Irmallian Naval Academy (2 years)

Introduction: Thenician spent the majority of his life adventuring on the high seas as Captain of the Rehal's Sunset, a name shared by the ship, and the mercenary company he led based out of it. Thirty years of successful adventuring brought him vast amounts of riches and fame, and in some cases notoriety. And most importantly, a lifetime of experience.

But a lifetime of experience is still a lifetime, and at over fifty years old, Thenician had been feeling his age for a while. It was then that a man named Rhatigan appeared to make him an offer that no amount of riches could buy, but his wealth of experience could afford. So in order to regain the strength of his youth, he became an agent for the Bonelotus.

I think that's enough to get things started.

I came up with the idea of saltwood as a good base for all of the action. Here is a good description of the place and any questions will be answered in ooc forum.

Saltwood is a port town that is split in half by a half mile wide river. It rests on the steep incline of the sharp valley carved by the once mighty river. The rivers mouth opens up into a wide bay with a single large island out in the middle of It.

Silent island: silent island is the towns cemetary. Its a little more than a square mile in diameter. The island is split by dark gravel trails and seperated by the age of the head stones. The newer parts of the island are still wide open with tall grass while the older parts are overcrouded. Silent island is a solid chunck of bedrock. Deep under the graves is an elaborate web of tombs and catacombs. Only the wealthy or the highly influential can afford to be buried way down in the cold tunnels. New catscombes are constantly being dug out and the dark rock being excavated becomes a new foot path or its added to a beach on one end of the island.

North Saltwood: as the town rises away from the river in steep hills the north side is steeper than the south. With such a sharp incline the houses seemed to be built on a gigantic flight of stairs. Crouding the north bank is a busteling market that is open everyday. Once past the market is the foot of the saltwood hill. the streets closer to the river are smaller and the houses and shops tightly packed into blocks carved by alleys. This is due to the rapid expansion the town went through. North saltwood is mainly residential but small shops, corner stores, barbers, and general goods dot the landscape with their overhanging signs and colorfull awnings. The mayor of north saltwood has issued a prohibition on alcohal in the northern half of the city as well as a curfew. North saltwood also has some of the best academys for enginiering and arcane sciences.

South Saltwood: the incline for the south side is less extreame resulting in larger buildings. South saltwood is closer to the hook of the bay. It has the cities largest ports as well as all of the industrial warehouses and factorys. The southern side of town does not have an alcohal ban and has many pubs, seedy inns and brothels through out the poorer residential districts. South saltwood is definetly the darker half. One could find anything they wanted, from weapons to drugs, tabboo, or any kind of illegal activity if they knew where to look.

In general: saltwood is a major city but not the biggest. Its a dark and crouded place where people who need to lay low can do so comfortably. Its form of law inforcement is a group of town appointed "sheriffs". Its a place where enginiering, magic, and industry grew together. The streets are dimly lit in many areas and the frequent fog and rains add to the already deep shadows. Saltwood gets its name from the days when the town was mainly made of wood and stone, the heavy salts carried in on the fog and rains stain the conbled streets and outsides of buiding a dull grey. On most nights the fog is so thick with brine that simply licking your lips brings the taste of salt. Crossing the river are two large rod iron bridges and two seperate cable gondola lines. Things like electricty and automobiles are common in this time period. As well as fire arms and complex mechanics.

Rhatigan. 6'2" 195 lbs. Dark brown eyes, shaggy dark brown hair. Lean lanky build. Attire: His trademark jacket. Black pants, black boots. He wears a belt with a few cargo pouches and a space for his enchanted dreadfang dagger.

Abilities: rhatigan has a long history. He was trained by a secret society of powerfull aristocratic wizards and mercenarys called the "bone lotus" society to be a formidable fighter but also a wildly potent necromancer. He is skilled in the art of shadowcasting where he can manipulate pure darkness as well as move through shadows. Rhatigan has found a way through meditation to tap into limitless amounts of dangerous black energys. He is an addict of a powerfull narcotic herb called "wierdroot" that enhances his magic abilities through mild halucinations. The herbs effects vary from mage to mage but people without any magic abilitys gain absoloutly no benefit from wierdroot.

Weapons: Rhatigans favorite way to fight is with his hands and battlemagic. His favorite two weapons are the dread fang kriss dagger that sweats an acidic venom that causes advanced decomposition of living tissue and a length of sectional chain with a spear head hanging at the end. The spear is steel and has a lock of black feathers that trails under the head of the spear. Rhatigan is a skilled martial artist but is not invinceable. He has lived an unnaturaly long life due to his magic and a formula he was given by his former masters in the bone lotus society.

Back story: rhatigan likes to keep to himself. After living as a soldier and a slave to the whim of an ancient society for close to 100 years rhatigan injoys his peace. He has fought in major battles, served as an assassin, taught magic at a school for the arcane, commanded forces and caused widespread destruction. He has created a name for himself within the bone lotus society as a man who could accomplish any mission given to him and then decided to suddenly disapear after a change of heart. But the bone lotus has a strict rule against leaving. For the last 50 years rhatigan has been in hiding. The last 20 have been spend in saltwood. Rhatigan has a job the head grounds keeper and grave digger at the towns cemetary; silent island.

Charles St. Angel.
6'0" 180lbs. Light blue eyes. Slicked back light brown hair. Clean shaven. Average build. Attire: all black uniform. Expensive black slacks, pointy toed leather black boots. Black collared jacket with a row of silver buttons and squared shoulders.

Abilities: St.Angel is a normal human being. He is a low ranking "warden". He belongs to a fantatical organization trying to push they're religion on people. They're called the national wardens of heratical defence and use infamously deadly force when preaching. St. Angel has a lot of training in the field and is very sharp. His cold eyes seem to miss nothing.

Weapons: just about every witchhunter (they hate being called witchhunters) carries with him a long thin bladed rapier and a six shot revolving pistol. They've been known to use certain magic spells for healing other uses even though they talk of the "evils" of magic.

Backstory: st angel was a little rich brat that grew into a older rich hypcrit. Family money bought him into the wardens but couldnt buy him true devotion or the fearlessness in the face of actual "evils". Many witchhunters are insanly dedicated to their mantra. Going to lengthy extreames to persecute the guilty in they're eyes. St. Angels seat in the wardens has an effect on his ego causing him to loose rational thought in the face of degradation. He is a tenacious man, very headstrong in his idea of what a good Warden is.

James "Jim" Scarborough.
5'10" 210. Brown eyes, brown hair, bold dark mustache. A little heavy set. Around 48 years old. Attire: all dark blue police uniform. Button up shirt, dark blue pants with a light blue stripe down each leg. Scarborough wears a hat unique from the other sheriffs. His resembles a hat short billed hat that many of the lower class citizens have chosen. He does this to fit in with the crouds he finds himself among daily.

Abilities: being a sheriff in saltwood for so long, James knows the entire town like the back of his own hands. He's worked both sides of the river and knows a lot of the illegal underground rings. He does what he has to do in order to be as effective as he can. Be it rough up an informant to pay off a snitch out of his own limited pockets. He's just like any other sheriff trying to make saltwood a little better for its law abiding citizens. He's been known to break laws in secrecy to catch dangerous criminals.

Weapons: the sheriffs of saltwood all carry high powered revolver pistols. Specialy made to house 8 shots instead of a normal 6. Aside from their guns they wield extendable patons with a large metal ball at the end of it. Scarborough is no exception. Although he would prefere to take his own cource of action instead of opening fire, he is an excellent marksmen with his pistol and with a rifle.

Backstory: James Scarborough was born in a town far south of saltwood. He has a particularly laid back and slow voice compared to the saltwood tough and fast sounding city accent. He joined a police force in his home town and moved to saltwood hearing about the oppertunities for promotion with all the crime. He has one of the most impressive records for following through on arrests. More than any other sheriff in saltwood history.

Name: Turtles.

A short, hunched, balding old man with a long beak like nose and bushy white eyebrows. Turtles used to work for the bonelotus as one of the few jade wizards they employed. A group of mages that specialized in plant life. Turtles was one of the men responsible for producing many of the bonelotus' potions and herbal stimulants. He was discharged when he became immune to the anti-aging serum. And moved to saltwood.

Rhatigan discovered turtles by asking around in the black markets for a good wierdroot connect. This led him to a small shop in north saltwood and an old aquaintance.
