I Remember

I opened my eyes and turned my head. She was staring at me. I couldn't tell she was staring. But I knew. She was staring.

She sat on chair, her back against the window. The pale light shined in on her brown hair and outlined the rest of her. Her head was leaning forward. But the darkness hid her face.

Her arms hung down her side and crossed over her lap. Her hands rested on her dress. The dress was slightly too big, slightly too old. Her legs dangled from it. Her feet never quite reaching the floor. She looked like a doll in some kid's collection.

The chair creaked. My body froze. I held my breath. Her arms stayed crossed. She never moved.

I turned my head back around, clenched my eyes. Slowly I pulled the blanket over my shoulder, passed my chin, over my cheeks...

I wish she would stop staring.

It was 3 in the morning. I was 9. And we had no girls in our family.
