Dark Tides ((Working title. Novel up for comment))

Well, I've had this project just sitting on the back burner for a long while with no change, so I thought it was high time to get it moving again. I've taken suggestions from some of you already but now I'm opening it for full comment and critique from start to finish.

So without further "gilding of the lilly" Here goes....
I'm an expert on shakespeare,
And that's a hell of a lot,
But the world don't need scholars,
As much as I thought.

"You tell me where Josh is, or I won't just give you a scene, I'll give you the whole goddamn stage play!"

CHAPTER 1

Postby Joshua Dyre » Fri Oct 29, 2004 10:23 pm

Sophia Wolfe was not used to following orders. Even her father found her rebellious and stubborn. But the urgency in the pathfinders voice bade her acquiesce. She kept close behind him, her eyes locked on the tall hunter's green-cloaked back, her gaze only once being pulled to search the darkness of the tunnel behind them. Something was there. She could feel it. Something powerful. During that one look she chanced that she had seen something staring back. It was enough to ensure that she didn't look again.

She shook from the adrenaline flowing through her veins. It had all happened so fast and with a brutality that had shocked her to the core. Only minutes ago she had been dining with her father. Then suddenly the pathfinder she now followed had burst in at the lead of a group of her father's guards. Horns had sounded. Men had shouted and screamed over the din of metal striking metal.

Everything else that had followed had been all too quick and sudden for her to take in. Men in the furs of savages had appeared as if from out of thin air, their faces covered in fresh scarlet dye, strange curved swords flashing back and forth. She was a lone spectator to a pitched battle. She was barely aware of her father shouting something, then the next thing she knew she was being dragged from the room and through a passageway she had never known had existed.

The hand of the hunter on her chest woke her from her memory and she realised he had stopped. He turned to look at her then beyond her, his keen grey eyes piercing the darkness, but showing none of the fear she had felt at that glance. He motioned for her to keep quiet, then brushed past her, his head cocked to the side as if he was listening to something, the torch held high above his head.

Finally he turned back to her and pressed something into her hand. "Take this m'lady and continue on. Mind your footing."

The knife glittered in the stark light. She'd never used one before, Had never had too, and she wished now with all her heart that she never would. Still her hand gripped it tightly and she felt a little reassurance from it's presence. "Wait." She looked up at him as she said the word. "What about you? Kerse you can't leave me on my own! I can't do this alone!"

"Hush child. I will follow when I can." He drew his sword slowly from it's scabbard. "I must see if your father is behind us."

Her father. The last time she had seen him, he was cleaving at a group of the savages with his great double-axe. "Kerse. What happened?"

"I don't know. But there will be time for answers later child. Now go!" He pressed the torch into her other hand and turned her about gently. Without another word he was gone, disappearing into the dark behind her.

Sophia didn't know how long she stood there, alone and terrified. For a time she couldn't make her legs move. Finally, little by little, pulling up on some well of courage deep inside, she urged herself onwards, her feet moving only inches at a time.
