The Cities (and Places) within Islan

Postby Voice Jade » Wed May 28, 2008 8:30 am

It is encouraged that you, citizens of Islan, come up with a settlement or two of your own description and also give feedback for what's in place. This thread will house the description of the cities and settlements. The development thread will be used to give feedback and suggestions before being put here. Additions or deletions to each city may be made depending on feedback or suggestions. Further details will also be added as feedback is given. You will note that some of these cities read 'unfinished', but we wanted to give you something.

If you refer to a city (or place) with an 'Islan' setting in your roleplay, feel free to add information regarding the place to this thread.

Salis

A Bustling city straddling the Tanir River, its unique layout and buildings are attributed to the blind and some what crazed architech Syris who modeled the city after a bizzare pendant he claims he was given by a shrouded woman he met in the forest of Ulgrah that lies to the north. With the river as its focal point running through the center of the city, the streets and alleyways form ever growing rings each ring expanding in size as you move out from the center. The City is broken into 3 sectors.

The Water Front Sector as it's referred to by the upper class denotes the center ring and the two outlying rings. The sector consists mainly of docks and warehouses used in the daily trading of the city with other regions. It also contains sewer tunnels long since abandoned after the introduction of a more advanced aquaduct. The more refined patrons of the city tend to avoid this area after dusk as its known for its various thieves guilds.

The next 8 rings are known as the Bazaar sector. The inner 4 rings are made up of taverns, Inns and various shops offering a vast array of goods. If you are willing to pay, you can find anything here. The outer 4 rings of this sector house the middle and lower class. The buildings are old, tall and crammed together with multiple families living in them with one family group per lvl.

Syris

Syris, also known as the Jade Mountain, is an island that sits in the middle of the bay of Cinas on the northern shores of Tonan. The island is a product of a dormant volcano long since sealed by an unknown force; its surface is covered with thick trees with hardly any underbrush. The center of the island rises high above the base with its side’s sloping downward at an extreme angle before gradually leveling off at the bottom.

On top of the peak sits Elnor Tir, the Royal Palace of Islan and home of the Queen. With the view of the palace obscured from below by a dense forest Very few people have actually been close enough to the Palace to give its true description, however, rumor has it that the walls are made of pure white marble, with turrets that spiral around a central spire that reaches into the clouds.

The only road leading from the palace winds down around the peak with several guarded checkpoints along the way. Halfway down the peak rests the Religious Sector of the island. Three main temples exist here positioned around the island on the northern, south western and southeastern sides. Constructed of magically imbued granite each temple seems to radiate a different color at night (white, green, and red respectfully) while appearing white during the day. The rest of this sector consists of housing for the priests and pilgrims that dominate the populace.

At the bottom of the road is seated the academic sector. This sector over looks the bay and is dominated by libraries and learning institutions.

As the road reaches the bottom of the peak it winds to the southern side of the island and connects to a man made land bridge that connects the island to the main land. Stretching for two miles the bridge is lined on both sides by massive marble statues of various religious and military figures.

As the land bridge meets the mainland it opens into a bustling city. The shoreline curves around the bay like a cresent moon with the west and east points ending in large seaside cliffs. The cliffs are littered with caves of various sizes that connect deep within the rock, this area is well known for its assassin and thieves guilds, all of which are rumored to have ties with Leto of The Underworld region. Gaurded patrols of this region are frequent.

The beach front is completely devoted to the wealthy. Lined with lavish manors that over look the bay, the view from the beach of the central island and the monuments that line the landbridge are breathtaking and highly sought after.

Behind the manors further inland lies the market place. The Market place runs the entire length of the shoreline, full of vendors and pedlars of all sorts if you can't find the item you seek here then it doesn't exist.

The defenses of the city are simple yet effective.

The waters outside of the bay are often racked by violent storms that can last weeks on end making attack by sea nearly impossible. Protecting the entrance to the bay itself is a massive coral reef that stretchs from the western side of the bay all the way to the eastern side. These features make trade by sea impossible, instead the city sees a constant flow of resources streaming in from the out lying areas of Islan.

The outside of the inland city is protected by a massive two story wall constructed of man sized granite blocks that are then lined with a light blue reflective volcanic glass. twelve feet wide the top of the wall is constantly patrolled by armed gaurds.
