Bran, it's on the bottom left of the homepage. It has a three step process type thingy. I don't know if they updated it since you last looked, though.

Symantec.com

'download removal tool' in the bottom left hand corner

scroll down until you see 'obtaining and running the tool'

click on the fixblast.exe link below that

download it to desktop

double click

click start

sit back for half an hour

:)

Easiest fix - download symantec.com's removal tool (linked on their front page), then apply the windows patch which has been available since mid-July and which you all should have downloaded by now since it's a critical update and fixes a known windows vulnerability.

Funny thing is, Sunny, our lab PC is set to run update every week automatically, yet it still caught the worm ::shrugs::

Btw, a bit of advice: you may need to disconnect your computer from the internet/network/whatever you have. I could only get the FixBlaster.exe file to run to completion under these conditions; the worm rebooted the machine partway through otherwise. Looks like it takes its cue to reboot your machine from other infected machines on the net.

The patch for that particular vulnerability has had problems, Zolt. A few of our customers have reported that it hasn't downloaded when they've tried to get every possible update. They have to select it manually to download it, though when it's finally downloaded and installed, it does what Microsoft say it should.

Pity the whole making computers crash was a flaw in the virus; it would have been interesting seeing people's computers suddenly launching attacks on that Microsoft site out of nowhere today and really seeing how it fared; as it stands it's gonna fizzle.

Oh yeah; I had Win 2k on my home comp. Unpatched. With Norton not updated.

And I got away with it.

Heh, I knew ZoneAlarm had a purpose ;)

Vesp, only most of our uni comps got taken down. The most important ones to me stayed up, on the basis that they're Comp Sci computers with a tendency not to use Windows like everyone else on campus. Whole affair pissed off my GF like hell tho, lol...
